If you have health records (surgeries, x-rays, blood tests, ...), please bring the results. A list of your medications is also helpful.
Depending on your preference, you may be in underwear or loose clothing to facilitate examination and movement. It is paramount that you are comfortable.
Sometimes some techniques may feel uncomfortable, but we will always ask for your feedback during treatment and work within your comfort zone. After treatment, you may experience pain or tenderness in the treated area, but this usually resolves within 24-48 hours. If you have any concerns after treatment, please call the clinic so we can give you more advice.
Our goal is to help you feel better as quickly as possible. However, every patient and every situation is different. During your first session we will discuss a treatment plan depending on your condition and goals. At each visit you will be re-evaluated and the treatment plan may change depending on your progress. Some patients only need one or two sessions. In other cases, such as post-injury rehabilitation, more sessions may be needed. Some patients come in for regular maintenance.
Our policy is that if you do not notice a change in your symptoms within the first three treatments, we can discuss other alternatives that may help, or refer you to your GP for further investigations. Usually the intervals between treatments are one week, although when the condition starts to improve they may be more spread out.
You can take a friend or relative to accompany you at any time.
Pregnancy leads to huge structural changes and as a result many women experience back pain. Osteopathy is a safe, effective and non-invasive therapy that can help a pregnant woman while her body adjusts to the weight of the baby.
Evidence suggests that osteopathy has one of the best safety records of all the medically related professions.
Osteopaths are trained to recognise the complaints/disorders that may make osteopathic treatment inappropriate and therefore the patient will be referred to an appropriate practitioner when necessary.
In the same way that a general practitioner would identify safety as the most important factor in deciding the appropriate remedy for a particular patient, an osteopath would also identify the correct style of treatment, with safety being the number one consideration.
These three therapies are quite similar, but there may be some overlap between the disciplines. One common goal is to reduce the patient's pain, and this is achieved by improving the patient's structure and function. Each of the therapies has its own philosophy and treatment approaches so that these common goals are achieved.
Chiropractors are in many ways very similar to osteopaths, but their philosophy is that everything needs a good nerve supply, whereas osteopathy assumes that all body functions are in harmony with a good blood supply! However chiropractors seem to manipulate the spine more, whereas osteopaths seem to use a greater range of techniques rather than just manipulation. Such techniques include stretching, massage, articulation (mobilisation). Most chiropractors work in 15-20 minute consultations, whereas osteopaths usually work in 30-40 minute appointments, which usually results in fewer treatments.
As a general rule, physiotherapists are less hands-on than osteopaths and chiropractors. Treatment is based on using more machines such as ultrasound, laser therapy and interferential therapy. They offer exercises for home use as well as osteopaths and chiropractors.
Osteopathy is a holistic approach that treats the whole body, the root cause, not just the symptoms.
Cranial osteopathy is a very gentle approach to osteopathic treatment. It uses subtle pressure to encourage the release of tension throughout the musculoskeletal system. This form of treatment is known as 'cranial' osteopathy as it often involves the head, but can also involve other parts of the body.
Cranial osteopathy works with the involuntary mechanisms of the body, helping to bring the body's natural biorhythms back into normal balance. All people are different, so I treat the individual, not just the problem.
Cranial osteopathy can help babies and children who have experienced a difficult birth. The therapy can be very effective for babies who suffer from sleep disorders, feeding difficulties, digestive problems and wind retention, helping them to cry less and feel calmer, relaxed and generally happier.
Cranial osteopathy is extremely gentle and can relieve pain in restless babies. Babies usually enjoy the sensations from osteopathy and are often calmer after treatment.
